About Arcade
Arcade is a small fishing village on the southern shore of the Ría de Vigo, about 15km from the city. What it lacks in size it makes up for in reputation: this is the oyster capital of Galicia, and arguably all of Spain.
The village's location on the ría - where fresh river water meets the Atlantic - creates perfect conditions for oyster cultivation. The local Ostrea edulis variety has been harvested here for centuries, and the tradition continues in the tiny oyster bars lining the waterfront.
There's no pretense here. You stand at zinc counters while locals shuck oysters in front of you. You drink Albariño from simple glasses. The focus is entirely on the product - and the product is extraordinary.
Unchanged & Authentic
Arcade remains a working fishing village. There's no gentrification, no tourist trap restaurants, no Instagram cafes. It's rough around the edges in the best way - the kind of place food pilgrims seek out.
Pilgrimage Destination
Spanish chefs and food writers have long made the journey to Arcade. It's mentioned in every serious guide to Galician food. But it remains remarkably under-the-radar internationally.

Local tip: Go hungry. The oyster bars open around noon and close when they run out. Mid-week visits are less crowded than weekends. Bring cash - some smaller places don't take cards.

Arcade is the oyster capital of Galicia. The village sits on the Ría de Vigo where the mix of fresh and salt water creates perfect conditions for oysters. The local variety - Ostrea edulis - is considered among the finest in Europe. You eat them standing at counters in tiny bars, shucked to order.
Arcade is about 15km from Vigo city center. By car: 20 minutes via the AP-9 motorway. By train: Regular Renfe cercanías trains from Vigo-Guixar (15 minutes). The train station is a short walk from the oyster bars. Some people take a taxi (€15-20 each way).
The traditional season runs from September to April ('months with an R'). However, thanks to modern aquaculture, you can get excellent oysters year-round. The Fiesta de la Ostra (Oyster Festival) is held annually in late March/early April and draws crowds from across Spain.
Expect to pay €1-2 per oyster depending on size and the establishment. A dozen large oysters with a bottle of Albariño might cost €25-35. This is significantly cheaper than what you'd pay in Barcelona, Madrid, or most of Europe for oysters of this quality.
Arcade's marisquerías serve the full range of Galician seafood: razor clams (navajas), cockles (berberechos), mussels (mejillones), percebes (goose barnacles), and local fish. Many places also serve pulpo a feira (Galician-style octopus). The seafood here is as fresh as it gets.
